Distortion, my new development from reflective surfaces is based upon Anish Kapoors 'Turning the world upside down' piece in the Kensington Gardens.http://www.serpentinegallery.org/2010/03/anish_kapoor.html - Relating it to the work I've been doing up to present I found it was able to influence me to move forward. Again using the face as a reflective surface, I want to present how a face isn't always reliable and honest. By distorting images takes away the full expression presenting it in a new light which isn't a mere smile on a piece of paper, it has been altered. I want to maybe test out this new idea by making shapes at first,to learn and understand this new way of drawing/painting before I move on to doing a flat surfaced distorted image. Depending on how the 3d shapes come on I'm not 100% sure I will follow on with the flat surfaced image. A flat surfaced image can be seen as pure, mostly it is what it is most of the time. A smile determining joy and celebration, general happiness. Then of course sadness, and everything in between. As you cant always rely on facial expression to see how a person is really thinking and feeling. Distorting it in my eyes takes it up to the next level, to see whats behind, whats inside. I'm going to try and relate the distortion to what is behind the images, maybe by personal preference but at first looking psychologically at what shapes might mean.
